Since 1974, Craig Hospital has been recognized as a Model Spinal Cord Injury System by the US Department of Education, National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research. The Model Systems programs promote research, service provision and exemplary health care to meet the needs of individuals with spinal cord injuries across the continuum of their lives.

As one of 14 SCI Model Systems, the RMRSIS at Craig Hospital identifies eligible participants for the database, and, with their consent, submits hospitalization and follow-up data to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center (NSCISC), located at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Over the years, these data have been used by countless researchers for numerous presentations, publications, conferences, and textbooks. The RMRSIS has contributed more data to the NSCISC than any other Model System, accounting for 21% of all data in the database.

In addition to these data collection efforts, the RMRSIS engages in research. For the current 2011-2016 funding cycle, the following studies are being conducted and led locally:

The RMRSIS also works with the other SCI Model Systems around the country on multi-site collaborative studies.
