Craig Hospital School Program

Our Craig Hospital School Program strives to “redefine possible” for high school students with spinal cord and/or traumatic brain injuries. Students (patients) and their families come to Craig Hospital from around the country, and staying on track academically while retaining school ties is an important connection to their real world. While at Craig Hospital, students work closely with our credentialed teacher to regain the highest level of independence and control as possible within their educational setting.  Students learn how to build upon strengths, access curriculum in innovative ways, self-advocate, and gain self-confidence….. all while earning school credit!

School credit may be earned in several ways. First of all, when appropriate, students have the chance to work on an academic class with our teacher, allowing them to join their peers and class “in progress” when they return to their home school. Their academic program while at Craig is shaped through direct and ongoing communication between our teacher and school personnel. In the best of worlds, assignments are provided by the student’s classroom teacher. Then, accommodations and modifications are made here as needed to ensure student success. Also, Adaptive Physical Education or Elective Credit may be earned through participation in daily therapies (OT, PT, Speech - individual and group classes; Therapeutic Recreation outings). Credit toward Modified Science may be an option as well (formal and informal education based on all aspects of one’s injury, especially the physical piece).

Prior to discharge, students and families work with our teacher to create a school transition plan in order to make the return to school as seamless as possible. Our teacher shares this plan (in person, if possible) with school personnel to educate as well as lessen anxiety for all involved.  Also, this plan is often used as the basis of an IEP or 504.

Did You Know…?

  • Approximately 25+ high school students rehab at Craig Hospital every year and participate is our school program?
  • Some stay for several weeks, others for months? One student spent his entire senior year at Craig….and graduated on time with his friends after completing four credits while here!
  • In 2012, more than 25 Craig Hospital “Grads” also became high school grads?  Over 90% continued on to college and the others are working.
  • Two “older” students earned their GEDs while at Craig Hospital with the help of our teacher? We even had graduation ceremonies, complete with caps, gowns, Pomp and Circumstance, and cake!
